At least thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.

The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
