Crew Member Discloses Depression After Deluge of Harassment Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She added that even with the backlash, considerable good had emerged from the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
