Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Spectators
The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward fans during a recent game at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty easily payable for the billionaire owner.
Offseason Issues and Public Spotlight
The incident comes after a contentious preseason for Jones, who encountered significant backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star pass rusher Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Moreover, Jones was a central figure in a streaming series that examined his role in building the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its recent title shortcomings.
