Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had netted just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham box.

What next for both teams?

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
