Uche Fuels Dominant Crystal Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden continental campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding result that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be enough to secure direct passage to the knockout stages, particularly after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season were no match against a mostly second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were further weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the official waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also blazed a glaring chance, indicating there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive night for the traveling side.
